The benefits of Indian classical music for the emotional well-being of teenagers

Our question

Can a raga change how a teenager feels?

Teenagers today deal with exam pressure, social media and late nights on their phones. Stress, anxiety and poor sleep are common. We wanted to know whether something as old as Indian classical music could help.

In Indian classical music, every raga is linked to a rasa, an emotional flavour such as peace, compassion or joy. Many ragas also belong to a particular time of day. Musicians have long believed that the right raga at the right time can calm or lift the mind. Our project tests that idea with real teenagers.

The project

Three parts

1. Proof

A questionnaire for 30 students: 15 who learn classical music and 15 who don't. We add interviews with parents from both groups and with experts in Indian classical music.

2. Tools

Raga Relief asks how you feel and plays a matching raga. The Sleep Lamp dims like a sunset while a night raga plays, then switches off.

3. Presentation

An interactive exhibition stall where visitors can try the tools themselves and see what we found.
